From this, by grounding ourselves in rhetorical and other communication theories and practices, we examine the contributions of significant people to the movement by examining the ways in which they grounded their discourse in religious language. By studying the Civil Rights Movement and the use of religious testimony, the application of civil religion, the use of the Bible, the use of biblical narratives, the role of the Church, and an understanding of God and God\u2019s action in world, helps to provide a basis for reflection upon issues that are germane to us even today.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #444444\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white;line-height: 13.5pt;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white;line-height: 13.5pt;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><i><span style=\"color: #444444\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Part of the class is to do a daily reflection paper on topics discussed in class. I will share some of the students\u2019 reflections in a series of posts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style='color: #444444;font-family: \"Arial\",\"sans-serif\";font-size: 10.0pt'><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white;line-height: 13.5pt;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-qxDJ28wSqEA\/UbdplwUgnsI\/AAAAAAAABEs\/NhNS1yinsC4\/s1600\/birmingham_campaign_water_hoses.jpg\" style=\"clear: left;float: left;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-right: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-qxDJ28wSqEA\/UbdplwUgnsI\/AAAAAAAABEs\/NhNS1yinsC4\/s320\/birmingham_campaign_water_hoses.jpg\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">As we continue with our daily readings and watching of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/amex\/eyesontheprize\/about\/fd.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eyes on the Prize<\/a> Documentary, the reflections from the students are getting deeper and more powerful as they reflect not only on the material, but from their own lives as well. For example, one student reflected on her thankfulness for being a part of the class.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-8EwX0V9hkkw\/UbdqvcLZfwI\/AAAAAAAABFQ\/BYeP2ZHf7jc\/s1600\/women+leading+march.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-8EwX0V9hkkw\/UbdqvcLZfwI\/AAAAAAAABFQ\/BYeP2ZHf7jc\/s320\/women+leading+march.jpg\" style=\"cursor: move\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p><span style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><i>I am glad that I enrolled in this course. I am deeply appreciative and so fortunate to be here. I think the main thing I felt when doing the readings for tonight\u2019s class is grateful; grateful to be here, to be studying the writings of these fine women and men, and grateful for the opportunity to learn from my classmates and professor. I am honored to have this chance to become a better human being.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">For another student, the class readings are helping the student to become a better preacher. In reflecting on a speech given by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, this student wrote,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p><span style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><i>Ministers should ask God to filter out anything that would get in the way of them preaching an unbiased Gospel and seeing things unclearly.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-BLZKPzjMGi4\/Ubdpuf-4kII\/AAAAAAAABE0\/kdNh68r5Gr8\/s1600\/national+guard+with+guns.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-BLZKPzjMGi4\/Ubdpuf-4kII\/AAAAAAAABE0\/kdNh68r5Gr8\/s320\/national+guard+with+guns.jpg\" width=\"320\"><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;line-height: 200%\">Again, noting that this was a problem for many segregation-minded preachers, this student reflected further,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;line-height: 200%\"><i>How can preachers proclaim God\u2019s word without first talking to God about it? Before declaring God\u2019s word, every minister must take time to prayerfully commune with God.<\/i><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;line-height: 200%\">This student was not the only one who made a connection from the readings to her or his own ministerial life. In reflecting from one of the sermons from our readings, one student noted: \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;line-height: 200%\"><i>After reading <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Vc-0lrtU2ZgC&amp;pg=PA334&amp;lpg=PA334&amp;dq=%E2%80%9COf+This+Gospel+I+was+Made+a+Minister%E2%80%9D+houck+and+dixon&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=G8ozd6TFrY&amp;sig=YOiXSCdN0mj2Qh5BsMc4MO7BEIY&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=RGC3Uc6QHYfC9QTIvYDwBw&amp;ved=0CDIQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&amp;am%0Ap;q=%E2%80%9COf%20This%20Gospel%20I%20was%20Made%20a%20Minister%E2%80%9D%20houck%20and%20dixon&amp;f=false\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cOf This Gospel I was Made a Minister\u201d<\/a>, I felt inspired and it increased my faith.\u00a0 Why? Because it gave me a valuable insight on what is the role of a minister.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-uyBf72TSgvM\/Ubdp47-8pEI\/AAAAAAAABE8\/V9Ag0rMyFTI\/s1600\/dogs+civil+rights.jpg\" style=\"clear: left;float: left;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-right: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/543\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-uyBf72TSgvM\/Ubdp47-8pEI\/AAAAAAAABE8\/V9Ag0rMyFTI\/s320\/dogs+civil+rights.jpg\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 200%;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">However, the most powerful reflections continue to come from the viewing of the Eyes on the Prize documentary.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;line-height: 200%\">One student who vividly remembers the \u201ccivil rights years\u201d wrote,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;line-height: 200%\"><i>I am hurt and angered at my memories of the late 50s and the 60s in Jim Crow Memphis\u2026.and have made progress (through God\u2019s intervention) in reconciliation with white America. The graphic scenes in the video are still penetrating and painful. The real pain is the knowledge that we still have so far to go to improve interpersonal and group relations in America. Race continues to be a major thorn in the underbelly of progressive America. Jim Crow is still alive and well in 2013!<\/i><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">What students are noting in reading speeches from the era along with hearing speeches from\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"line-height: 200%\">die-hard segregationists is that this rhetorical template is still in play. In short, what students are so surprise to read and to hear is that the strategies, arguments, and rhetorical flourishes made in support of segregation and Jim (and Jane) Crow are still made today for a host of initiatives programs, and policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 200%\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">I continue to be inspired by this group and look forward to sharing more reflections.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white;line-height: 13.5pt;margin-bottom: .0001pt;margin-bottom: 0in\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Andre E.
