News of the study resulted in some controversy after\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/study-female-breadwinners-ignites-verbal-brawl-215634287.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a heated exchange<\/a>\u00a0between Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and members of an all-male on-air panel on the subject sparked strong responses across media outlets.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 27.296875px;margin-bottom: 1em\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">For those of us who grew up in certain sectors of the American church, the controversy is not surprising or new. Perhaps you too remember James Dobson taking to the airwaves to tell men that it is their divine responsibility to provide and women that it is their divine responsibility to nurture (as though the two are mutually exclusive). \u00a0Some Christians continue to characterize fathers who share parenting responsibilities or stay at home with their children as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abpnews.com\/faith\/theology\/item\/7840-prof-terms-stay-at-home-dads-%E2%80%98man-fails%E2%80%99\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">man fails<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/lovejoyfeminism\/2013\/01\/mark-driscoll-on-stay-at-home-dads.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">worse than unbelievers<\/a>,\u201d instructing women to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/lovejoyfeminism\/2013\/03\/focus-on-the-family-feminism-is-the-way-of-death.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">intentionally avoid earning more money than their husbands<\/a>, even if it is less practical for their family to do so, or else they will injure their spouse\u2019s ego.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 27.296875px;margin-bottom: 1em\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">There are a few reasons why these legalistic approaches to gender roles are unnecessary impositions on Christian families and those seeking to participate in the life of the Church and why,\u00a0<em>without diminishing the importance and value of homemaking or childcare,<\/em>\u00a0we should not \u201cshut the door to the kingdom\u201d to families based on their socioeconomic status, unique callings and gifts, household structure, or earning arrangements.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 27.296875px;margin-bottom: 1em\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Read the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/rachelheldevans.com\/blog\/breadwinning\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week,\u00a0a Pew study\u00a0revealed that in four out of ten American households with children, the mother is the sole or primary breadwinner for the family, the highest share on record.
