More and more I find myself responding, \u201cI am not a guy,\u201d to waiters in restaurants, to educated people at conferences, and even to people in progressive churches who refer to groups of women and men as \u201cyou guys.\u201d Sometimes these are groups of all women, and still they call us \u201cyou guys.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
So the idea for this article has been stirring in me for a while. Its title was inspired by the work of Jeanette Blonigan Clancy, a Catholic lay theologian who writes a blog called \u201cGod Is Not Three Guys In The Sky,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and David Marks, a Presbyterian music minister whose blog is called \u201cGod Is Not a Guy.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n
Just when I thought we\u2019d about eliminated the so-called \u201cgeneric\u201d use of \u201cman\u201d because it really is exclusive, up pops \u201cyou guys\u201d almost everywhere. Women and girls seem to use \u201cyou guys\u201d as much as men and boys do. So why do females think they\u2019re included in \u201cyou guys\u201d? These same women usually protest loudly when they are referred to as \u201cmen\u201d or \u201cman,\u201d as the King James and other older versions of the Bible do and as many churches still do. So why do they think it\u2019s okay to be called by the male word \u201cguys\u201d?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
