Martin Luther King Jr. earned his doctorate at nearby Boston University under the tutelage of theologian Howard Thurman. Thurman served as the dean of Boston University\u2019s Marsh Chapel from 1953-1965, the first black man to occupy such a prominent position at a majority-white American university.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: 0px;color: #444444;line-height: 20px;margin-top: 20px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Walton celebrates his connection to black America\u2019s\u2014and black Boston\u2019s\u2014storied past. But he is not beholden to it. \u201cWe\u2019re all standing on the shoulders and benefiting from the sacrifices of those who came before us,\u201d Walton explains. \u201cBut it can\u2019t be totally reducible to race,\u201d or for that matter, religion. Walton is a self-described \u201cpost-civil rights kid.\u201d This means instead of focusing on the battles of the past, Walton hopes to \u201ccontribute a voice to some of the challenges of the contemporary age, informed by the religious traditions from which I come.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: 0px;color: #444444;line-height: 20px;margin-top: 20px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Walton spoke with\u00a0<i style=\"border: 0px;color: #333333;margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">R&amp;P;<\/i>\u00a0about how he understands the long history\u2014and continued importance\u2014of people of faith engaging constructively and critically in politics. In his capacity as a preacher, scholar of American religion, and commentator on American culture, Walton sees his work as fundamentally \u201cabout the rich tradition of the Hebrew prophets: to be
