I\u2019m a Christian and as such I consider myself as being both spiritual\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0religious but these quotes do seem to be potent and convey something worth pondering.<\/span><\/div>\n
Over the past few years, there\u2019s been a notable rise in the percent of the young adult population who identify themselves as being either\u00a0\u201cspiritual but not religious<\/a>\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 or as\u201cnone of the above<\/a><\/strong>\u201d \u2013 entirely unaffiliated spiritually.<\/span><\/div>\n
I suppose this may be related to a tendency for young adults to register as \u201cindependent\u201d instead of as either Democrat or Republican politically. Seems we don\u2019t like to be \u201cdefined\u201d or \u201clabeled.\u201d And yet, being unaffiliated is its own label \u2013 and people still define us.<\/span><\/div>\n
In the same way that non-denominational churches have effectively become a denomination of their own, a case can be made that \u201cspiritual but not religious\u201d have become their own tribe (denomination).<\/span><\/div>\n
Some will read that and resist saying, \u201cbut we\u2019re not like a\u00a0religion<\/em>\u00a0or something.\u201d Indeed. And that\u2019s the problem.<\/span><\/div>\n
Too many of the growing crowd of those who are spiritual free agents are doing plenty of things to improve\u00a0themselves.<\/em>\u00a0They\u2019re growing to some extent as\u00a0self<\/em>-helpers. They\u2019re meditating, doing yoga, lighting incense, wearing patchouli, toking mary jane, and re-posting all sorts of pretty pictures on Facebook with cool quotes or feel good aphorisms. They\u2019re \u201cdoing\u00a0their<\/em>\u00a0work\u201d \u2013 exploring (some of) their shadows, \u201ccircling,\u201d and otherwise learning how to divorce themselves from their elders and traditions and become their \u201cauthentic\u00a0selves<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Good for them.<\/span><\/div>\n
The trouble is, for too many of these spiritual unaffiliateds, their spirituality begins and ends \u2013 with\u00a0them<\/em>. In other words, what\u2019s good for them, isn\u2019t good for us. The collective us. The community. You know, the other 7 billion people on the planet.<\/span><\/div>\n
