Live and let live, right?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif\">We should realize, however, that the social norm that discourages the criticism of religion can work to the great advantage of religious political activists. Social conservatives, for example, righteously claiming the highest<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"pt-basics-link decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/basics\/morality\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at Morality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">moral<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif\">authority grounded in religion, knowing that criticism of religion is considered off-limits, can demand that their policy positions be given legitimacy even when those positions lack any rational basis.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 20px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 20px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">This is precisely what is playing out as\u00a0<a class=\"ext decorated-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/02\/08\/catholic_bishops_will_object_to_any_contraception_rules_that_make_it_easier.html\" style=\"color: #333333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">America\u2019s Catholic bishops reject the latest effort from the Obama administration to find common ground on the debate over contraception coverage<\/a><span class=\"ext\"><\/span>. The administration, bending over backwards to appease the clerics, proposed a plan that would allow religious employers to avoid paying for contraception coverage, placing the burden of such coverage on insurers instead.
