The interviews were audiotaped and transcribed. Qualitative data analysis identified themes that were coded. The codes were entered into SPSS software. The Fisher\u2019s exact test was performed to examine group differences in self-reported spiritual coping.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sec\" id=\"__sec3\" style=\"border: 0px;clear: both;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">\n<h3 style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;line-height: 1.2857;margin: 1.2856em 0px 0.6428em;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><b>Results:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"__p3\" style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin-bottom: 0.6923em;margin-top: 0.6923em;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Significantly more depressed African Americans questioned God when learning of a cancer diagnosis than the non-depressed African Americans (<em style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">p<\/em>=.03), but they did not differ from the depressed Whites in this regard (<em style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">p<\/em>=.70). Significantly more depressed African Americans reported having faith in God (<em style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">p<\/em>=.04), reading the bible (<em style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">p<\/em>=.02), and conversing with God (<em style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">p<\/em>=.01) than did the depressed Whites. They also reported praying alone (<em style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">p<\/em>=.01) more frequently than the depressed Whites who, on the other hand, reported praying with others (non-family members) together for one\u2019s own health more frequently (<em style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">p<\/em>=.04).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sec sec-last\" id=\"__sec4\" style=\"border: 0px;clear: both;font: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">\n<h3 style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;line-height: 1.2857;margin: 1.2856em 0px 0.6428em;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><b>Conclusions:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"__p4\" style=\"border: 0px;font: inherit;margin-bottom: 0.6923em;margin-top: 0.6923em;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Depression is associated with a deepening need for spirituality and it affects religious beliefs and practices more in African American than White cancer patients.
