In the 1950s and 1960s, scholars studied civil religion as a cultural phenomenon, attempting to identify the actual tenets of civil religion in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/United_States_of_America\" style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;line-height: 24px;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: initial;vertical-align: baseline\" title=\"United States of America\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">United States of America<\/a><span style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 24px\">, or to study civil religion as a phenomenon of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/Cultural_anthropology\" style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;line-height: 24px;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: initial;vertical-align: baseline\" title=\"Cultural anthropology\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">cultural anthropology<\/a><span style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 24px\">.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;line-height: 24px;padding: 0px 0px 1em;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif\">Dr. Gary Scott Smith says in his op-ed piece of the same title in Penn Live that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/opinion\/index.ssf\/2013\/01\/op-ed_civil_religion_binds_the_nation.html\" style=\"background-color: transparent;border: 0px;font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: initial;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Penn Live\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;border: 0px;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">civil religion binds the nation:<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;line-height: 24px;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">\n<div style=\"background-color: transparent;border: 0px;color: #666666;font-family: PTSerif, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size: 16px;font-style: italic;padding: 0px 0px 1em;vertical-align: baseline\">\u201cThe knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny,\u201d Barack Obama proclaimed in his first inaugural address, \u201cis the source of our confidence.\u201d Obama also accentuated God\u2019s grace and asked Him to bless the United States. In both campaigning for office and as president, Obama has testified to his personal faith.
