In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s essay, \u201cNonviolence and Racial Justice,\u201d he observes that true peace requires \u201cthe presence of some positive force\u2014justice, good will and brotherhood.\u201d In today\u2019s world, this sense of solidarity and concern for the good of others\u2014the poor, the incarcerated, the immigrant, the unemployed, those with little or no access to healthcare and so forth\u2014seems to have diminished significantly.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
In contrast, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was animated by a strong sense of human solidarity, believing that as those created in God\u2019s image we belong to one another. In addition, Dr. King\u2019s belief in human solidarity, the inherent dignity of all human beings, and the need to work toward creating a world where all humans can flourish compelled him to action. As we know, he chose the path of non-violent direct action and protest, convinced that this was the path most consonant with his Christian faith. Of course this was not an easy path. He received criticism from black activists as well as white society. His protests even landed him in jail and ultimately cost him his life.<\/span><\/div>\n
In Dr. King\u2019s famous \u201cLetter From a Birmingham Jail,\u201d he writes, \u201c\u2018I am in Birmingham because injustice is here.\u2019 Then a few lines later he continues, \u201c[m]oreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial \u2018outside agitator\u2019 idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
In what \u00a0follows I address what critical race theorists and sociologists refer to as white advantage, white privilege, white habitus, or the \u201cinvisibility\u201d and normativity of whiteness.\u00a0 My hope is that by interrogating whiteness we might become aware of and uproot racial prejudices in our own thinking and awaken in ourselves a sense of solidarity and genuine concern for human flourishing for all.<\/span><\/div>\n
