You\u2019ve all heard about the \u201cspiritual but not religious\u201d revolution.\u00a0 Growing numbers of people, especially in the United States and Canada (as well as the rest of the so-called \u201cWest\u201d) have declared their freedom from religion, which is usually defined in institutional terms.\u00a0 This group is included in those who\u2019ve been given the name \u201cNones.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not that they don\u2019t believe in God, most do, they just don\u2019t like the trappings of religion.\u00a0 And with all the scandals and such, it\u2019s understandable that people would seek other ways of finding God to be present.\u00a0 For many in this group, a more eclectic vision of spirituality is sought.\u00a0 Indeed, many seek to create their own spirituality, picking a little of this and a little of that, combing Western and Eastern forms, and tossing it all together.\u00a0 You might call it fusion spirituality.\u00a0 But is such spirituality enough?\u00a0 Is it sustainable?\u00a0 Does it change lives?\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

As one who lives in the midst of institutional religion \u2013 I am after all a pastor \u2013 I have something at stake in this conversation.\u00a0 But perhaps, so do those whose spiritual tastes are \u201ceclectic.\u201d\u00a0 They, after all, often borrow from the religions they reject.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Diana Butler Bass has recently written about what\u00a0Christianity might look like after religion,<\/a>\u00a0and she ultimately concludes that complete abandonment of tradition and institution is probably not wise or workable.\u00a0 At the same time, things need to loosen up a bit, so that the Spirit can move.\u00a0 With this conversation going full force, Lillian Daniel, Pastor of First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, takes up the challenge of responding to the purveyors of this new vision of\u00a0dereligionized<\/i>\u00a0(is this a neologism?) spirituality in an aptly titled book:\u00a0When\u00a0\u201cSpiritual but Not Religious<\/i>\u201d is Not Enough.<\/b>\u00a0 Daniel is, you might say, not especially impressed with the \u201cspirituality\u201d offered by many of those who embrace a\u00a0dereligionized<\/i>\u00a0form.\u00a0 In response she wants us to be more aware of God\u2019s presence in our midst, noting, as the subtitle suggests, that we can find God present in surprising places, \u201ceven in the church.\u201d\u00a0 I realize that many have decided that the church is the last place to look for God, but maybe that\u2019s not really true.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
