Millions more took in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/US\/huckabee-campaign-ad-election\/2012\/10\/31\/id\/462212\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse;color: #005689;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: initial\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">media advertisements sponsored by religious groups<\/a>\u00a0that made the same point.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border-collapse: collapse;color: #333333;font-family: arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 18px;margin-bottom: 13px;padding: 0px\">Let us set aside the question about whether God takes sides in American elections. The more pressing fact about this kind of religious-political\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/advertising\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse;color: #005689;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: initial\" title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on Advertising\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">advertising<\/a>\u00a0is that you, dear taxpayer, are footing part of the bill.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border-collapse: collapse;color: #333333;font-family: arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 18px;margin-bottom: 13px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2012\/11\/15\/section-3-the-voting-process-and-the-accuracy-of-the-vote\/\" style=\"border-collapse: collapse;color: #005689;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: initial\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">According to a recent Pew survey<\/a>, about 13% of regular churchgoers reported receiving \u201cpolitical information\u201d at church services, and about half of those said they were urged to support a specific candidate or party. So, to use the language of marketing, church-based advertising reached somewhere between 8 and 16 million \u201ceyeballs\u201d.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border-collapse: collapse;color: #333333;font-family: arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 18px;margin-bottom: 13px;padding: 0px\">If candidates had to buy this kind of advertising \u2013 and they surely would if they could \u2013 it would cost them tens, or perhaps hundreds, of millions of dollars over the course of a campaign. And, of course, the money they raised and spent would all be subject to tax.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border-collapse: collapse;color: #333333;font-family: arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 18px;margin-bottom: 13px;padding: 0px\">Religious organizations, on the other hand, are largely exempt from taxes.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border-collapse: collapse;color: #333333;font-family: arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 18px;margin-bottom: 13px;padding: 0px\">Now, tax exemptions are really just another name for a public subsidy. If I don\u2019t pay my share of public expenditure on roads, law enforcement, defense and so on, the difference has to come from you.
