I was no great fan of Mitt Romney\u2019s, as I think I\u2019ve already\u00a0made quite clear<\/a>.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t like him.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t vote for him.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad he lost.<\/div>\n

However, as much fun\u00a0 as it has been to watch people dance around the post-election bonfire of Sheldon Adelson\u2019s money, I actually have something good to say about Romney\u2019s abortive attempt at the White House.\u00a0 There was something about his candidacy specifically that gives me a little hope that America is getting a little bit better.\u00a0 (Full disclosure: this post started out as a kernel of thought when I considered what nice thing I might have to say in the event of an actual Romney win.)<\/div>\n

I have\u00a0 written before<\/a>\u00a0about being brought up in a fundamentalist evangelical church.\u00a0 While I have no enmity toward the individual people I knew in that church (who, almost to a man or woman, were generous, goodhearted and kind), I have little good to say about it and its ilk as a whole.\u00a0 I reject the vast majority of its theology, and consider its influence in American politics corrosive and pernicious.\u00a0 But I\u2019m getting ahead of myself.<\/div>\n

It wasn\u2019t just the gays that I was taught to despise and fear.\u00a0 Those people saw Satan everywhere.\u00a0 I meaneverywhere<\/em>.\u00a0 I was taught that the national forest near my hometown was crawling with satanists ready to murder me in gruesome ritual sacrifice.\u00a0 (Really.)\u00a0 I was taught that the New Age movement was merely repackaged devil-worship.\u00a0 (Makes you listen to Enya in a whole new way, I\u2019ll bet.)\u00a0 I was taught to see the handiwork of Beelzebub in movies and books and toys.<\/div>\n
Satan was\u00a0everywhere<\/em>.<\/div>\n
