At Jezebel, Erin Gloria Ryan signaled a kind of defeat in the \u201cwar on women\u201d by assessing the losses suffered by \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5958480\/team-rape-lost-big-last-night\" style=\"color: #f43940;text-decoration: initial\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">team rape<\/a>\u201d; in\u00a0<em>USA Today<\/em>, Amanda Marcotte charged that Republicans lost the culture war by, among other things,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2012\/11\/07\/culture-war-republicans-gay-marriage\/1689507\/\" style=\"color: #f43940;text-decoration: initial\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ignoring women\u2019s reproductive rights<\/a>; and Hanna Rosin,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/11\/07\/opinion\/rosin-women-election\/index.html\" style=\"color: #f43940;text-decoration: initial\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">writing for CNN<\/a>, was less convinced that this vote meant anything historic for women, though she did acknowledge that female officials have gained a broader access to power.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"p2\" style=\"background-color: white;color: #555555;font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;font-size: 15px;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px\">I\u2019m still fixated, however, on a couple of phenomena that have, quite likely, already fallen off of most people\u2019s radar: the weird conjunctions between religion and feminist politics that have emerged over the past year. Notable in this regard (of course) are those Nuns on the Bus. But the more perplexing example, I think, is the Pussy Riot phenomenon which, as I see it, marks a new kind of relation between religiosity and feminist politics.<\/div>\n<div class=\"p2\" style=\"background-color: white;color: #555555;font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;font-size: 15px;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span class=\"s1\">Imprisoned band members of the Russian punk collective Pussy Riot may be on their way to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticwire.com\/global\/2012\/10\/russia-went-ahead-and-sent-pussy-riot-worst-prison-camps-possible\/58226\/\" style=\"color: #f43940;text-decoration: initial\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"s2\">work camps<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the furthest reaches of Russia, while their very \u201cbrand\u201d is now the subject\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2012\/11\/who-owns-the-pussy-riot-brand\/264486\/\" style=\"color: #f43940;text-decoration: initial\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"s2\">of heated dispute<\/span><\/a>. But it\u2019s still too soon to tell what remains to be done in the name of\u2014or in communal solidarity with\u2014Pussy Riot. Last month, four women occupied St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral in London by chaining themselves to the altar\u2014allegedly a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.chicagotribune.com\/2012-10-14\/news\/sns-rt-us-britain-occupybre89d0j2-20121014_1_city-of-london-corporation-stage-protest-large-banner\" style=\"color: #f43940;text-decoration: initial\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"s2\">display of concord<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with Pussy Riot\u2019s \u201cpunk prayer.\u201d Additionally,\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/22\/nyregion\/rule-forbidding-masks-at-protests-is-to-be-challenged.html?_r=0\" style=\"color: #f43940;text-decoration: initial\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">several women (arrested for wearing the iconic Pussy Riot balaclavas at a protest in front of the Russian consulate) will be challenging an 1845 New York mask law that prevents crowds of masked bodies from gathering in a public space.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"p2\" style=\"background-color: white;color: #555555;font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;font-size: 15px;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span class=\"s1\">Read the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/archive\/atheologies\/6402\/pussy_prophets_%26_nuns_on_buses%3A_will_feminist_politics_get_more_holy_%26_foolish\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The end of election season has various commentators reflecting on what the vote for Barack Obama (and against the Republican Party) means for women.
