According to a new book by Rice sociologist and Kinder Institute for Urban Research Co-director Michael Emerson, this couldn\u2019t be further from the truth.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;color: #333333;font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12px;line-height: 18px;margin-bottom: 1.25em;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.rice.edu\/2012\/11\/09\/new-book-by-rice-sociologist-examines-race-religion-in-america\/1109_emerson-book\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36997\" style=\"color: #313428\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-36997\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/news.rice.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/1109_EMERSON-book.jpg\" width=\"250\"><\/a>\u201cBlacks and Whites in Christian America,\u201d authored by Emerson and Jason Shelton, an assistant professor of sociology and anthropology at the University of Texas\u2013Arlington, examines the differences between the two races when it comes to their faith through the use of empirical interviews and research.<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;color: #333333;font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12px;line-height: 18px;margin-bottom: 1.25em;padding: 0px\">\u201cWe often hear the term \u2018the black church,\u2019\u201d Emerson said. \u201cWe really wanted to find out, what is the black church? We wanted to know how black Protestants \u2013 who comprise 93 percent of black churchgoers \u2013 differ from their white counterparts.
