Conventional wisdom holds that Christians, as members of a \u201cuniversal\u201d religion, believe more or less the same things regarding their faith. According to a new book by Rice sociologist and Kinder Institute for Urban Research Co-director Michael Emerson, this couldn\u2019t be further from the truth.<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/a>\u201cBlacks and Whites in Christian America,\u201d authored by Emerson and Jason Shelton, an assistant professor of sociology and anthropology at the University of Texas\u2013Arlington, examines the differences between the two races when it comes to their faith through the use of empirical interviews and research.<\/div>\n
\u201cWe often hear the term \u2018the black church,\u2019\u201d Emerson said. \u201cWe really wanted to find out, what is the black church? We wanted to know how black Protestants \u2013 who comprise 93 percent of black churchgoers \u2013 differ from their white counterparts. We wanted to see if there\u2019s anything unique about how they practice their faith.\u201d<\/div>\n
Emerson said that while their research, including interviews with numerous black pastors, showed that there are \u201cabsolutely no differences\u201d between blacks and whites when it comes to the core beliefs of Protestants (that is, the Apostles\u2019 Creed), it revealed \u201cstunning\u201d differences about how the two groups go about their faith.<\/div>\n
