On June 19, 2012, the Southern Baptist Convention elected Rev. Fred Luter of New Orleans, Louisiana as its 57th president. He becomes the first African American to hold that position in the group\u2019s history, dating back to 1845 when the group split with other Baptists because it defended slavery as biblical.
