Robert D. Put\u00adnam, the Bowl\u00ading Alone author and social sci\u00aden\u00adtist, spoke recently in Louisville, KY, hosted by sev\u00aderal churches and a tem\u00adple. His book, Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Grace, co-authored with David E. Camp\u00adbell, has been out since 2010, but the book\u2019s mes\u00adsage has yet to sink in. Their sub\u00adti\u00adtle, How Reli\u00adgion Divides and Unites Us, is no chi\u00adas\u00admus, but points to a chasm between Right and Left in Amer\u00adi\u00adcan reli\u00adgious life. The chasm was opened up first by the sex\u00adual rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion of the late \u201860\u2019s, then by the reac\u00adtion called the Reli\u00adgious Right, and now by young peo\u00adple react\u00ading against the polit\u00adi\u00adcal power of con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive reli\u00adgion. The chasm is over\u00adcome on the per\u00adsonal level by a sur\u00adpris\u00ading amount of tol\u00ader\u00adance, an Amer\u00adi\u00adcan grace, but such tol\u00ader\u00adance may mean lit\u00adtle for the main\u00adline church or social justice.<\/p>\n

This edi\u00adto\u00adr\u00adial will sum\u00adma\u00adrize the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Grace argu\u00adment and iden\u00adtify some of its impli\u00adca\u00adtions for justice-oriented faith. Just to state one of the biggest at the out\u00adset: if young peo\u00adple find the \u201cChurch\u201d most intol\u00ader\u00adant on issues of sex\u00adu\u00adal\u00adity and gen\u00adder, should the PC(USA) and other main\u00adline bod\u00adies not be clearer about their sup\u00adport for gay and les\u00adbian peo\u00adple, rather than mod\u00ader\u00adate their views and con\u00adtinue to be lumped neg\u00ada\u00adtively with \u201creli\u00adgion?\u201d And even if young peo\u00adple are more turned off by hypocrisy than turned on by jus\u00adtice, should churches not try to give more of a jus\u00adtice vision and iden\u00adtify them\u00adselves more strongly with a greener and more egal\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adian future? If not, the real dan\u00adger Put\u00adnam and Camp\u00adbell point to is that bag\u00adgage from the Reli\u00adgious Right will con\u00adtinue to erase our wit\u00adness in a shal\u00adlow and reac\u00adtive culture.
