As his campaign surges, Rick Santorum is testing an untested model for incorporating religion into his message. He is betting that Americans want a president who uses faith not just to inspire \u2014 but also to judge.<\/p>\n

This weekend, Santorum told supporters in Ohio that President Obama\u2019s environmental views reflect \u201csome phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible.\u201d Santorum said later that he believes Obama is a Christian, but he says that the president subscribes to the idea that the Earth\u2019s needs should be put above mankind\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe .\u2009.\u2009. that\u2019s what we\u2019re here to do,\u201d Santorum said on CBS\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation\u201d on Sunday. \u201cWe\u2019re not here to serve the Earth. The Earth is not the objective. Man is the objective.\u201d<\/p>\n

That argument seems to fit an older pattern in Santorum\u2019s rhetoric. As a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Santorum blasted other politicians and Catholic universities for disregarding church doctrine.
