Violence was seen in the New World, in the name of the Church by Conquistadors and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Society_of_Jesus#History\" style=\"color: #7f4d00;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesuit<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Inquisition\" style=\"color: #7f4d00;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">monks and priests<\/a>. Christians in the medieval period burned books \u2014 and people. The\u00a0<i style=\"color: #7f4d00;text-decoration: none\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inquisition\" style=\"color: #7f4d00;text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Inquisition<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>tortured confessions from people, and if that was not enough, they either hanged them or burned at the stake.
