It was billed as a unity celebration.<\/p>\n

But there was not much evidence of that as Spartanburg\u2019s African American residents streamed in to the city\u2019s main auditorium as part of a week of \u201ccelebrating people of all cultures and ethnicity\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly a few white folks will come out to something like this,\u201d said Lisa Campbell, an African American student. \u201cIt\u2019s racism. Racism is still prevalent here. It\u2019s not real subtle.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Campbell laughs at the question as to whether she\u2019ll be voting in South Carolina\u2019s Republican primary election on Saturday. So does another woman at the concert to mark Martin Luther King Day, Kathy Edwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all about this with the Republicans,\u201d she says pinching her own black skin. \u201cI\u2019m 58 now. It\u2019s better than it was but with the Republicans it\u2019s all about race even if they don\u2019t say it.\u201d
