I can\u2019t be the only person who heard about the Penn State child rape scandal and thought, \u201cHoly crap \u2014 it\u2019s just like the Catholic Church.\u201d The abuse of power by a trusted authority figure; the coverup by people in authority; the unwillingness of witnesses to speak out; the grotesque, morally bankrupt defenses of a beloved institution by its followers\u2026 all of it is depressingly familiar.<\/p>\n

And I can\u2019t be the only critic of religion who\u2019s been wondering, \u201cHmm. If Penn State has been acting like the Catholic Church\u2026 then did the Catholic Church child rape scandal actually have anything to do with religion?\u201d<\/div>\n
