This Tuesday, Mississippians will vote on Initiative 26, a \u201cpersonhood\u201d amendment to the state constitution that\u00a0defines a person<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cevery human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the functional equivalent thereof.\u201d This \u201cprofoundly ambiguous\u201d amendment will deliberately trample on a woman\u2019s reproductive health and privacy, essentially\u00a0criminalizing abortion<\/a>,\u00a0outlawing contraception<\/a>\u00a0like the birth control pill, and even preventing couples from having a child through\u00a0in vitro fertilization<\/a>.<\/div>\n
It is these consequences that leave even the most staunch anti-choice activists cold. The National Right to Life organization has\u00a0refused to promote it<\/a>. Even the\u00a0Catholic Bishops<\/a>\u00a0have refused to endorse the amendment, noting that the bill is so extreme, it could jeopardize their more serious efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade:<\/div>\n

In the letter [Jackson Bishop Joseph Latino] called Personhood Mississippi \u201ca noble initiative.\u201d However, he said,\u00a0\u201cI join with Catholic bishops in several other states in not endorsing personhood petitions to be circulated in our Catholic parishes. We have committed ourselves to working for a federal amendment and feel the push for a state amendment could ultimately harm our efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.<\/strong>\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
