This article roots the historical biblical concept of scarcity in pharaoh\u2019s desperate need to maintain power over resources.\u00a0This becomes important to consider because over 75% of Americans self-identify themselves as \u201cChristian\u201d according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/geos\/us.html\" style=\"border: none;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: underline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">CIA<\/a>\u00a0with over 2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2007\/05\/13\/the_list_the_worlds_fastest_growing_religions\" style=\"border: none;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: underline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">billion<\/a>\u00a0Christians worldwide.\u00a0It is important to assess the dominant American theological paradigm guiding our collective social interactions around economics and resources.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: none;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: normal;line-height: 20pt;margin: 0px 0px 10px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"border-bottom-style: none;border-color: initial;border-left-style: none;border-right-style: none;border-top-style: none;border-width: initial;font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;font-size: small;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\">As I read the Brueggeman article my mind immediately started wandering and making connections with a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/10\/15\/world\/occupy-goes-global\/index.html\" style=\"border: none;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: underline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">CNN article<\/a>\u00a0I had recently read on the Occupy Wall Street movement and its global shifts to Europe, Asia and Australia with focused protests surrounding corporate power, grinding poverty and government cuts.\u00a0Brueggeman asserts that money has become a type of\u00a0<em style=\"border-bottom-style: none;border-color: initial;border-left-style: none;border-right-style: none;border-top-style: none;border-width: initial;font-style: italic;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\">narcotic<\/em>\u00a0and consumerism specifically has moved beyond being a market strategy to become a kind of \u201cdemonic force\u201d in American culture.\u00a0The mindset of scarcity is a fear based social lens and belief system assuming that there is \u201cnot enough\u201d for everyone of which Occupy Wall Street has taken direct issue with.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: none;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: normal;line-height: 20pt;margin: 0px 0px 10px;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"border: none;font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;font-size: small;margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Read the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stateofformation.org\/2011\/10\/occupy-wall-street-abundance-v-scarcity\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tiffany Buchanan While preparing for class recently, I read an article by Walter Brueggemann \u201cThe Liturgy of Abundance, the Myth of Scarcity\u201d which takes a Christian theological analysis to the notions of abundance and scarcity.
