So why does religion make us do the worst? Not in a specific historical event \u2013 though these surely color the ways fundamentalism manifests in the present \u2013 but in our present relationship with our own deep formative years.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"border-bottom-style: none;border-color: initial;border-left-style: none;border-right-style: none;border-top-style: none;border-width: initial;font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font: normal normal normal 1.25em\/normal Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;line-height: 20pt;margin-bottom: 10px;margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-top: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: small\">If we look at the various approaches to understanding human nature, we find they all speak in terms of a narrative that depicts a process of change and growth through time. Those narratives take very different forms. In psychology, the narrative is the story of an infant\u2019s growth through formative years to adulthood. In the Judeo-Christian tradition it is the story of the Hebrew people\u2019s encounters with and troubled relationship with their God.
