{"id":289,"date":"2014-12-01T03:29:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-01T03:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/rhetoricraceandreligion\/2014\/12\/from-nones-to-dones.html"},"modified":"2014-12-01T03:29:00","modified_gmt":"2014-12-01T03:29:00","slug":"from-nones-to-dones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/rhetoricraceandreligion\/2014\/12\/from-nones-to-dones.html","title":{"rendered":"From Nones to Dones"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Just as churches, seminaries and congregational consultants began to wrap their heads around the concept of the \u201cnones\u201d in religious life, another category of Americans abandoning the church emerged\u2014the \u201cdones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first group denotes the growing number of Americans with no religion affiliation. \u201cNones,\u201d who may represent as much as 38 percent of the population, are known for generally having had no or very little in the way of religious upbringing.<\/p>\n<p>But sociologists, church historians and congregational coaches realized another subset of Americans are answering \u201cnone\u201d on surveys about religious affiliations: Those who have grown up in the church and remained active in adulthood\u2014at least until getting tired of church life.<\/p>\n<p>They have been included in other names created by researchers, including the \u201cunchurched\u201d and the \u201cdechurched,\u201d and they have been the target of evangelistic efforts now and then. But the newer term, \u201cdones,\u201d captures a fact about them other monikers didn\u2019t\u2014they\u2019re finished with church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s not a whole lot of hope of them coming back,\u201d said Thom Schultz, a Colorado-based blogger and co-author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0764488449\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0764488449&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwbaptiststa-20&amp;linkId=ZCPPWLNMGKER2VW5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2018Done\u2019 with church but not God<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Schultz posted a blog recently that introduced the term \u201cdones\u201d for Christians turned off by their church experiences.
