This is also why it is important that when such endeavors are undertaken, they not ultimately be headed by white pastors and leaders (and they so often are). It\u2019s why we must hedge toward the marginalized culture in planning worship services and events, rather than compromising squarely in the middle. I know I can be a little edgy and unorthodox in my attempts to articulate the gospel on a grass roots and socially conscious level\u2026. how many times do I have \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d in the manuscript? Can I say \u201cnigga\u201d or \u201cdamn\u201d or \u201chell\u201d today? The brother said he\u2019s Baptist\u2026is that Southern Baptist? He referenced the KJV\u2026 will they be taken aback by my use of the NRSV or references to the Message Translation or the EIV (Earle International Version \u2013 not published yet but helps me preach better!!!)? We preach salvation through Jesus Christ. That is primary. But the black church also has served community needs, psychological needs, help to mobilize political activism.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #141823;\" data-reactid=\".f2.1:4:1:$comment10153452465019168_10153452631154168:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1.$comment-body.0.3\"><span data-reactid=\".f2.1:4:1:$comment10153452465019168_10153452631154168:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1.$comment-body.0.3.0\"><span data-reactid=\".f2.1:4:1:$comment10153452465019168_10153452631154168:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1.$comment-body.0.3.0.$end:0:$text0:0\">There is also an aspect of social justice that is intrinsic to the black church. I was profoundly disappointed when I learned a Christian school in Cary NEVER, EVER talked about Ferguson, Eric Garner or Michael Brown to its student body! Fortunately, they did bring up Baltimore and its injustice in an English class and chapel. Social justice and black Christianity go hand in hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/rhetoricraceandreligion\/2015\/06\/faith-and-forgiveness-obamas-political-theology.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Faith and Forgiveness: Obama\u2019s Political Theology<\/a><\/p>\n<p>by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctschicago.edu\/about\/news-media\/873-new-faculty-member-dr-christophe-ringer\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"> Christophe Ringer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lost on Graham was Obama\u2019s articulation of grace that refused to let America as a political community off the hook for this act of racial violence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Obama squarely invoked the history of racial violence, racial subjugation, systemic oppression, voting rights, unjust public school systems, unconscious racial bias, and collective salvation. More importantly, he argued that we don\u2019t need \u201cmore talk.\u201d Far too often in the face of racial violence and unrest we retreat from messiness of public life in order to have more \u201cconversations around the kitchen table.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/rhetoricraceandreligion\/2015\/07\/confessions-of-a-woman-who-preaches-on-being-a-sacred-listening-partner.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Confessions of a Woman Who Preaches: On Being a Sacred Listening Partner<\/a><\/p>\n<p>by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christthekingucc.org\/pastor-traci-blackmon---biography.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Traci Blackmon<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">I have walked with women who left home, left school, left church, left town\u2026because some sadistic pervert violated their bodies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">I\u2019ve taught bible studies about the silent abuse of women intertwined and ignored in sacred text. I\u2019ve watched women run out of the room, burst into tears, and even experience mental regression because of the land mines in their memories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">I listened to stories of incest and molestation in childhood that is still bringing grown women to their knees. I\u2019ve talked to prostitutes who first trick was someone who should have been the first to teach them their worth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">I\u2019ve sat with women as they got rape tested and women who held their breath hoping they were not pregnant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">I\u2019ve heard so much that I needed therapy to clear my head, heart, and soul.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are the top posts for the week of July 6-12, 2015 on the Rhetoric Race and Religion Blog.
