Not just evangelicals but all Christians believe Jesus is the Savior, and that the Bible tells us about him.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">But watching how these two priorities come together\u2013watching how Jesus read his Bible (the Christian Old Testament)\u2013can create some awkward moments, because Jesus read his Bible in ways evangelicals are taught over and over again not to read it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><strong style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\">1. Jesus didn\u2019t stick to what \u201cthe Bible says,\u201d but read it with a creative flare that had little if any connection to what the biblical writer actually meant to say.\u00a0<\/strong><br>Evangelicals are told to respect the Bible by \u201csticking to the text\u201d and not go beyond it. Jesus did the opposite.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">For example, in the book of Exodus (chapter 3), God speaks to Moses from a burning bush. This being the first encounter, God introduces himself (verse 6): \u201cI am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.\u201d In other words, \u201cThe one speaking to you, Moses, is none other than the God of your ancestors, and I\u2019ve got a very big job for you: go down to Egypt and bring my people out of slavery.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Enter Jesus. We find him in Luke\u2019s Gospel (chapter 20) debating a religious party known as the Sadducees. One of their beliefs is that after you die, you\u2019re worm food. Other Jews, including Jesus, were of the Pharisee party. They believed that God will one day raise the dead.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">So to prove his point\u2013that the Sadducees were wrong and God does indeed raise the dead\u2013Jesus recites the verse from Exodus above, where God introduces himself to Moses.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Read the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/pete-enns\/3-ways-jesus-read-the-bib_b_5902534.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Evangelicals\u2013and I\u2019m among them\u2013Jesus and the Bible are high on the priority list.
