The arrest of Minnesota Vikings halfback\u00a0Adrian Peterson<\/a>, who is accused of abusing his 4-year-old son while disciplining him with a switch, has rekindled the long-running debate about\u00a0corporal punishment<\/a>. There haven\u2019t been any public opinion surveys that have asked specifically about the Peterson case. Nor has there been consistent polling of American attitudes on the use of switches. But polls consistently show most Americans believe spanking is an appropriate form of discipline, although it varies by party identification, race, region and religion.<\/span><\/div>\n
Since 1986, the\u00a0University of Chicago<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0General Social Survey<\/a>\u00a0(GSS) has asked respondents, \u201cDo you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree that it is sometimes necessary to discipline a child with a good, hard spanking?\u201d (For this article, I have merged the responses \u201cstrongly agree\u201d and \u201cagree,\u201d as well as \u201cstrongly disagree\u201d with \u201cdisagree.\u201d I have also eliminated the responses in which people said they were unsure, though only 1.5 percent in the sample gave this answer).<\/span><\/div>\n
