The Greater St. Mark Church was raided today\u00a0as\u00a0St. Louis County Police thought that protesters were spending the night in\u00a0the church, which has been used as a staging area for protestors.\u00a0Police<\/a>\u00a0have since closed the building and stated that if anyone congregates on the premises at night, there would be arrests. One member of the\u00a0Dream Defenders<\/a>\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cwhat [the police]\u00a0did today is\u00a0tell us, what?\u00a0There is no safety here<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
The Pastor of the church, Missouri Representative Tommie Pierson (D), said of the\u00a0police<\/a>\u201cthey don\u2019t like us too much.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Earlier the\u00a0same day, Missouri\u00a0Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson asked the police department chaplain to\u00a0pray<\/a>\u00a0before giving the late night report. One line was particularly\u00a0stunning: \u201cAgain we come here having used all the energy and all the resources that you have given to our residents, their families, and our peacekeeping force, to bring peace\u2014your peace.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
While the killing of\u00a0Michael Brown<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0egregious enough, the manner in which the Ferguson police force and Captain Ron Johnson have used prayer to sanction their police actions and violence towards citizen protestors is detestable.<\/span><\/div>\n
America has a history of those in authority invoking Christianity to justify slavery, lynching, and bombings. During\u00a0the conflict in Ferguson, the local and state police who recite nightly prayers before going out to intimidate and arrest protestors follow this historical trajectory.<\/span><\/div>\n
