Summum\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2009\/02\/court-allows-religious-monument\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">allowing<\/a> a town in Utah to keep its display of the Ten Commandments in a public park. The case came before the court after the city rejected a monument proposed by members of the Summum religion who wanted to display their faith\u2019s Seven Aphorisms in the park as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">In 2010, Kennedy wrote the opinion for the 5-justice majority in Salazar, et al., v. Buono, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/04\/28\/AR2010042801949.html?sid=ST2010042805891\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">upheld<\/a> the constitutionality of the 6 \u00bd-foot Mojave Memorial Cross in California on land maintained by the National Park Service.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br>One case dealt with the controversial issue of prayer before public meetings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">In 2014, Justice Kennedy wrote the majority opinion in Town of Greece v. Galloway, in which the court <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/06\/nyregion\/supreme-court-allows-prayers-at-town-meetings.html?_r=0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">defended<\/a>, in a 5-4 decision, the right of the city to begin its meetings with sectarian prayers, of which all but 4 of its 127 monthly sessions between 1999 and 2010 were explicitly Christian.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br>The case came before the court after a Jew and an atheist from the New York town \u2014 uncomfortable with having to either feign piety or stand out in front of their fellow citizens and powerful board members during these prayers \u2014 were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/local\/2013\/11\/04\/greece-prayer-case-heads-to-supreme-court\/3436417\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">told<\/a> to close their ears or wait in the hall until the invocation was over.
