Almost no Americans used the Internet in 1990, while 87 percent use it today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Is the Internet causing us to lose our religion?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, says <a href=\"http:\/\/allendowney.blogspot.com\/2012\/07\/secularization-in-america-part-six.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Allen Downey<\/a>, professor at the Olin College of Engineering in Massachusetts. He <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1403.5534\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">analyzed data<\/a> and found that the statistical increase of those who claim no religious affiliation can be partially explained by an increase in Internet use.<\/p>\n<p>Downey found correlations between a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/alltechconsidered\/2014\/04\/21\/303375159\/americas-less-religious-study-puts-some-blame-on-the-internet\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">decrease in religious affiliation<\/a> and three factors: a drop in religious upbringing, increase in college education, and an increase in Internet use. He controlled for factors such as income, socioeconomic status, and rural versus urban environments. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/01\/15\/169342349\/more-young-people-are-moving-away-from-religion-but-why\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Religious upbringing<\/a> is the most influential factor \u2014 25 percent of the decline is linked to those raised without religion. Only 5 percent of the decline is linked to an increase in college education.
