But last summer, without telling her husband and two kids exactly what she was doing, she boarded a plane for a conference in Kansas whose purpose many evangelicals would plainly consider heretical.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Tincher was one of 50 people flown from around the country and the world\u2014Canada, China, Nigeria and South Korea\u2014to a four-day\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reformationproject.org\/2013-inaugural-conference\" style=\"text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bible boot camp<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to discussing, and embracing, gay relationships. The gathering was organized by Matthew Vines, who by then was enjoying modest fame for a 2012\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ezQjNJUSraY\" style=\"text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">YouTube video<\/a>\u00a0in which Vines, looking even younger than his 21 years, delivers an hour-long lecture arguing that the Bible does not, in fact, condemn all same-sex relationships. The video has gone viral, racking up more than 730,000 views to date,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/16\/fashion\/matthew-vines-wont-rest-in-defending-gay-christians.html\" style=\"text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">landing<\/a>\u00a0Vines on the cover of the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0Sunday Styles section and helping him raise $100,000 for the conference, where he launched\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reformationproject.org\/\" style=\"text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Reformation Project<\/a>, a nationwide network of pro-gay evangelicals committed to ending their church\u2019s longstanding hostility toward gay people.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Tincher told me she had once \u201ctried on\u201d an anti-gay attitude to fit in with her conservative community in Liberty Township, outside Cincinnati, but like many evangelicals, she struggled to see how homophobia could accord with an all-loving Christian God. So when her pastor sent her a link to Vines\u2019 video, she recalls, \u201cI remember sitting in my kitchen and just crying. I knew it in my heart, but I had never been told that from the pulpit.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"p3Global\" id=\"widgetMagazineGlobalSponsoredContent\"><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">It\u2019s no secret that attitudes toward same-sex relations have changed in this country: Gay marriage is legal in 19 states plus the District of Columbia, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/publicreligion.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014.LGBT_REPORT.pdf\" style=\"text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">all major public opinion surveys<\/a>\u00a0now show a majority of Americans are in favor of it.
