The late James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, put best in song, \u201cIt\u2019s a Man\u2019s, Man\u2019s, Man\u2019s World.\u201d Patriarchy assumes that men are made to lead and women are simply cooperative and reproductive subordinates. These assumptions come to light in all kinds of ways, but especially through religion \u2014 the various faiths that treat women as though they are not equal to men.<\/p>\n<p>We read it in the Quran and the Bible. We see it in iconic imagery, and religious taboos about sexuality, particularly women\u2019s sexuality. And we see that around the world these days, from Salt Lake City to Sudan. Men continue to dominate religious institutions, and use them to judge whether women can be in religious leadership or change faiths.<\/p>\n<p>There is a direct link between <a href=\"http:\/\/religion.blogs.cnn.com\/2014\/06\/24\/mormon-who-advocated-ordination-of-women-is-excommunicated\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kate Kelly<\/a>, a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter day-Saints, who was excommunicated on charges of apostasy, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/06\/25\/world\/africa\/sudan-christian-woman\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Meriam Ibrahim<\/a>, a Sudanese woman sentenced to death for her supposed apostasy. And the link is deeper than the charge of abandoning one\u2019s faith.<\/p>\n<p>Patriarchy comes in all forms, but religious patriarchy seems particularly pernicious because it assumes that male rule is constituent of God or the gods.
