There\u2019s been a lot of discussion lately of the ideological roots of the Christian Right. Sarah Posner\u00a0dissected<\/a>\u00a0Nebraska Senate candidate Ben Sasse\u2019s dissertation here on RD, noting that according to Sasse, the \u201croots of the modern religious right lie in the 1962 and 1963 Supreme Court decisions striking down\u00a0mandatory\u00a0public school\u00a0prayer\u00a0and\u00a0Bible reading.\u201d According to Sasse, those decisions \u201ctouched a nerve\u201d among the grassroots, which led to the subsequent rise of the right as a \u201cspontaneous\u201d response to \u201cjudicial tyranny.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
In\u00a0Politico<\/a>, historian Randall Balmer takes another view, deconstructing the right\u2019s creation myth, which centers on\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0as the catalyst for the Moral Majority. He reiterates that it was anger over the removal of federal tax exempt status from segregationist Christian academies in the South, which had been created as an end-run around the desegregation of public schools, that politically activated the right.<\/span><\/div>\n
Sensing that \u201che had the beginnings\u00a0of a conservative political movement,\u201d political strategist Paul Weyrich and \u201cother leaders of the nascent religious right blamed\u201d President Jimmy Carter \u201cfor the IRS actions against segregated schools\u2014even though the policy was mandated by Nixon.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
But, \u201chaving tapped into the ire of evangelical leaders,\u201d says Balmer, Weyrich was \u201csavvy enough to recognize that organizing grassroots evangelicals to defend racial discrimination would be a challenge.\u201d So he turned to a more palatable issue\u2014abortion.<\/span><\/div>\n
