Those who want more religion in American life should pay close attention: The text may not be what you think.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">The Ten Commandments have played a starring role in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/intellectualconservative.com\/how-liberalism-violates-all-10-commandments\/\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">campaign<\/a>\u00a0to bring more religion into public life while, in a post-9\/11 world, carefully distinguishing \u201cour\u201d religion from \u201ctheirs.\u201d In 2005, Justice Antonin Scalia called the commandments \u201ca symbol of the fact that government derives its authority from God.\u201d That declaration came as the Court approved public display of the commandments in a \u201csecular\u201d context in a 5-4 vote, while barring it in a \u201creligious\u201d context in another 5-4 split. Social conservatives were unsatisfied.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/ws\/?pid=101961\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">2012 Republican platform<\/a>\u00a0called for public display of the Ten Commandments \u201cas a reflection of our history and of our country\u2019s Judeo-Christian heritage.\u201d The platform added a clear message about \u201cevery citizen\u2019s right to apply religious values to public policy.\u201d Though the commandments were not at issue in the Court\u2019s recent 5-4 ruling permitting explicitly religious prayer at government meetings, the majority opinion reflected the same support of \u201cceremonial\u201d religion, as Justice Anthony Kennedy phrased it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">But if ever there were an example of the slippery slope between \u201cceremonial\u201d and sectarian religious symbols, then the Ten Commandments surely qualify.
