A group of progressive Catholic organizations writing under the banner of the Nuns Justice Project has sent an\u00a0open letter<\/a>\u00a0to Pope Francis asking him to personally intervene to remove the \u201cunjust mandates\u201d placed\u00a0on the Leadership Conference of\u00a0Women Religious by the Vatican.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
They say that the recent\u00a0harsh criticism<\/a>\u00a0of the LCWR and Sister Elizabeth Johnson, \u201cone of the most beloved and respected theologians in the world,\u201d by\u00a0Cardinal Gerhard M\u00fcller,\u00a0\u201ceclipsed any opportunity for public dialogue\u201d and \u201ccommunicates that faithful Catholic female leaders are disrespected and discounted in our Church.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
All valid criticism, but I wouldn\u2019t hold my breath waiting for the Vatican to respond because\u00a0it\u2019s clear it\u00a0has a serious hearing problem\u00a0when it comes to women, a deafness that dates back to the period right after Vatican II, when women began agitating for leadership roles in the church. That\u2019s when the Conference of Major Superiors of Women Religious changed its name to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, an upgrade that didn\u2019t go over well with the Vatican, which objected to the nuns\u2019 appropriation\u00a0of the word \u201cleadership,\u201d which, obviously, is reserved for men.<\/span><\/div>\n
Sister Margaret Brennan, who was the head\u00a0of the conference at the time, respectfully requested an audience with Pope Paul VI to explain the conference\u2019s rationale for the change. He\u00a0not only refused to see Brennan but refused to even respond to a woman\u00a0directly. He had Cardinal John Krol,\u00a0head of the U.S. bishops\u2019 conference, deliver the message to Brennan that if she was \u201cmore obedient\u201d she might get in to see the pope.<\/span><\/div>\n
