Here is a single paragraph from Peter G. Heltzel\u2019s\u00a0Jesus & Justice: Evangelicals, Race & American Politics<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0These five sentences describe a single tantalizing fork in the road, and a wrong turn taken.<\/span><\/div>\n
Understand and absorb these five sentences and you can understand the entire history of white evangelicalism in America over the past 50 years:<\/span><\/div>\n

In 1965 [Carl] Henry sent Frank E. Gaebelein to cover the march in Selma, Alabama. An associate editor of\u00a0Christianity Today<\/em>\u00a0and the founder and headmaster of the Stony Brook School, New York, Gaebelein went to Selma and was so inspired that he wired Henry in Washington, DC, that evangelicals needed to join the march. But Gaebelein\u2019s stories of the Selma march never saw the light of day. The resistance at\u00a0Christianity Today<\/em>\u00a0was coming primarily from two people: J. Howard Pew, the Texas oil man and the financer of\u00a0Christianity Today<\/em>, and L. Nelson Bell, Billy Graham\u2019s father-in-law and an editorial adviser at\u00a0Christianity Today<\/em>, who still had segregationist views. Pew and Bell did not want\u00a0Christianity Today<\/em>\u00a0to speak out too critically against racism and capitalism, because they thought it would alienate important segments of the magazine\u2019s constituency.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Henry did publish\u00a0Gaebelein\u2019s initial report from Selma, which ran in\u00a0CT<\/em>\u00a0on April 9, 1965<\/a>. Pew and Bell weren\u2019t wrong \u2014 it did, indeed, alienate important segments of the magazine\u2019s constituency. Gaebelein\u2019s subsequent reporting was censored, so he took off his reporter\u2019s hat and joined the marchers, participating in further demonstrations and voter-registration drives.<\/span><\/div>\n
