The outrage at Cliven Bundy\u2019s\u00a0comments<\/a>\u00a0about \u201cthe Negro\u201d is\u00a0bipartisan<\/a>\u00a0in way that the outrage at\u00a0Duck Dynasty<\/em>\u2018s Phil Robertson was not. The two, you may recall, said broadly similar things\u00a0about black people<\/span>, but Robertson never used the word \u201cNegro,\u201d and Bundy never\u00a0disparaged gay people in the name of his religious beliefs.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
We\u2019ll start with what each said. Here\u2019s Bundy, from\u00a0The New York Times<\/em><\/a>:<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cI want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,\u201d he said. \u2026 \u201c[B]ecause they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?\u201d he asked. \u201cThey abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And\u00a0I\u2019ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy?<\/strong>\u00a0They didn\u2019t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And here,\u00a0from\u00a0GQ<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is what Robertson said last December.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cI never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I\u2019m with the blacks, because we\u2019re white trash. We\u2019re going across the field\u2026. They\u2019re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, \u2018I tell you what: These doggone white people\u2019\u2014not a word!\u2026\u00a0Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Emphasis added in each. Bundy\u2019s language is a little rougher; he uses the\u00a0archaic and cringe-y<\/a>\u00a0word \u201cNegro\u201d and doesn\u2019t talk about working alongside black people. And, of course, he points to slavery specifically. But the core of each argument is the same: Black people were better off, happier, even when toiling under harsh, white masters than when the government offered them support.<\/span><\/div>\n
