In his masterful reconstruction of American religious history,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=8bvFdq_YwfUC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=Awash+in+a+Sea+of+Faith&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=q-ZGU-LsG-nEyQHnvoGIDQ&amp;ved=0CC0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" style=\"text-decoration: none\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Awash in a Sea of Faith<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(from which the previous anecdote is drawn), Jon Butler reports that Christianity was \u201cin crisis\u201d in the New World:<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: white\">\n<div style=\"line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Pennsylvania aside, the Restoration colonies of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and North and South Carolina exhibited extraordinary spiritual discord and sectarianism as well as a remarkable but all too familiar indifference to things spiritual. In America\u2019s first European century, then, traditionally thought of as exclusively Puritan, Christian practice not only proved insecure but showed dangerous signs of declining rather than rising.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-top: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,
