A papyrus fragment of \u201cThe Gospel of Jesus\u2019s Wife\u201d that was\u00a0dismissed<\/a>\u00a0by the Vatican as a \u201cclumsy forgery\u201d has been dated as having originated in Egypt around 700 C.E.<\/span><\/div>\n
In an\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0published Tuesday in\u00a0Harvard Theological Review<\/em>, Karen King provides evidence that \u201cThe Gospel of Jesus\u2019s Wife\u201d (GJW<\/em>) cannot be a modern forgery.<\/span><\/div>\n
The significance of\u00a0GJW<\/em>\u00a0stems from the fact that it appears to be a dialogue between Jesus and his disciples about the role of women in the church. \u201cThe dialogue concerns family and discipleship,\u201d King wrote, and \u201cJesus speaks of \u2018my mother\u2019 and \u2018my wife\u2019 in lines 1 and 4, and line 5 refers to a female person who is able to be Jesus\u2019s \u2018disciple.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
The evidence that the work is not a modern forgery is of both the intellectual and scientific sort. The carbon \u201clamp black\u201d pigments in which it is written \u201cmatch closely those of several manuscripts from the Columbia [University] collection of papyri dated between 1 B.C.E. and 800 C.E., while they deviate significantly from modern commercial lamp black pigments.\u201d Radiocarbon analysis of the papyrus fragment \u2014 conducted at the NSR-Arizona ANS Laboratory \u2014 indicated that the papyrus itself originated between 404 and 209 B.C.E.<\/span><\/div>\n
The discrepancy between the date of the papyrus and the date of the ink on it is not unusual, as paper was a highly valued commodity that was often rewritten upon for hundreds of years. However, King had Noreen Tuross of Harvard and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute retest the papyrus, and she generated a mean date of 741 C.E. for\u00a0GJW<\/em>.<\/span><\/div>\n
In either case, King wrote, all scientific \u201ctesting thus supports the conclusion that the papyrus and ink of\u00a0GJW<\/em>\u00a0are ancient.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
