As anticipated well before its release Darren Aronofsky\u2019s\u00a0Noah<\/em>\u00a0has seen\u00a0Glenn Beck<\/a>,\u00a0Ken Ham<\/a>,\u00a0Jerry Johnson<\/a>, and others express outrage at the film\u2019s departures from the Bible. In response, articles in\u00a0Slate<\/a>,\u00a0National Catholic Register<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0and numerous blogs have turned to Genesis 6-9 to gauge the film\u2019s fidelity to \u201cthe original.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Teasing his\u00a0Daily Beast<\/a>\u00a0article, for instance, Yale\u2019s\u00a0Joel Baden\u00a0tweeted<\/a>: \u201cThe new\u00a0#Noah<\/a>\u00a0movie: just how biblical is it?\u201d Meanwhile, James Tabor of UNC Charlotte, observes\u00a0on HuffPo<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cnone of these Christian critics explain why this ancient story, written by Jews, and part of the Hebrew Bible, should fall under Christian purview or guardianship in terms of its interpretation,\u201d and opines that \u201cthese two Jewish guys, Aronofsky and his former Harvard roommate and writing partner, Ari Handel\u2026 have ended up in my view producing a film that profoundly reflects biblical themes that have been lost in most common readings of the Noah story in Genesis 6-9.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
What\u2019s interesting to me, however, is that both sides agree that biblical fidelity is even the key question; the film itself lacks any claim of this sort, and\u00a0Aronofsky himself<\/a>\u00a0described it as the \u201cleast biblical, biblical movie ever made.\u201d Furthermore, the Flood is far from just a \u201cbiblical\u201d idea. Scholars of ancient Israel have long read Genesis 6-9 in relation to\u00a0Atrahasis<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Gilgamesh<\/em>, which are but two of the cross-cultural continuum of Flood-stories. It\u2019s not just a modern secularizing conceit to claim that the Flood might speak across and beyond Christian religious interest.<\/span><\/div>\n
