It sometimes seems that a woman, upon becoming pregnant, ceases to be a full and complex human being. Instead, the fertilized egg, zygote or embryo in her uterus is valued more highly than her actual life.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">This happened recently in Texas, where a brain-dead pregnant woman was put on life support for weeks against her own\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/54187680\/ns\/us_news\/#.UvEg7LRSCzY\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">wishes<\/a>\u00a0and those of her husband and parents.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2014\/01\/24\/3205351\/marlise-munoz-off-life-support\/\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Marlise Mu\u00f1oz<\/a>\u00a0was 14 weeks pregnant when she collapsed on the kitchen floor and suffered\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/husband-pregnant-wife-off-life-support\/story?id=21291086\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">oxygen deprivation to<\/a>\u00a0the brain. Because she was pregnant, machines kept her heart and lungs working in order to keep her fetus alive. Only after tests revealed severe fetal \u201cabnormalities\u201d did a judge overrule the hospital\u2019s directive and order Mu\u00f1oz to be disconnected from the machines.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Such a tragic incident spotlights the horrible impact of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoice.org\/about_abortion\/facts\/trap_laws.html\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">intrusive laws<\/a>\u00a0that claim to be pro-life but actually trample on the lives of women and their families. Unfortunately,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frc.org\/\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">many people<\/a>\u00a0who promote these laws often claim religion as their justification.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;border: 0px;direction: ltr;line-height: 21px;margin-bottom: 15px;padding: 0px;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\">Given this connection, one might assume that to be religious is to be anti-choice \u2014 and conversely, that one cannot be both a person of faith and a supporter of abortion care. But in reality,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2013\/01\/17\/1461611\/religious-support-roe-v-wade\/\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">people of faith<\/a>\u00a0have long supported a woman\u2019s right to make the complex decision about whether to have a child, trusting that she will discern what is best for her. Many Christian\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rcrc.org\/homepage\/perspectives\/\" style=\"border: 0px;line-height: inherit;margin: 0px;padding: 0px;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">religions<\/a>, as well as Judaism and other faiths, consider reproductive health care to be a justice issue.
