Little,\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sc.edu\/uscpress\/books\/2013\/7274.html\" style=\"text-decoration: none\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Origins of Southern Evangelicalism: Religious Revivalism in the South Carolina Lowcountry, 1670-176<\/a>0\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"font-size: small\">(University of South Carolina Press, 2013).<\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"line-height: 18px\"><br>Here\u2019s an important and (relatively) new title to call to your attention, especially for those of you in colonial history, southern religious history, and eighteenth-century American studies.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background-color: white;line-height: 22.390625px\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"line-height: 18px\"><br>In this work, Thomas Little seeks to revisit the \u201corigins\u201d question \u2013 in this case, the \u201corigins of southern evangelicalism.\u201d And he does so through intensive, painstaking research into religious practices in South Carolina through the late 17<\/span><sup style=\"line-height: 13px\">th<\/sup><span style=\"line-height: 18px\">\u00a0and first half of the 18<\/span><sup style=\"line-height: 13px\">th<\/sup><span style=\"line-height: 18px\">\u00a0century.<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 18px\"><br>\u00a0There are bits and pieces of this story (Jonathan Bryan, George Whitefield\u2019s tours, the SPG missionary Francis Le Jau, and a few others) which have been discussed elsewhere and are staples of the story; but there are an awful lot of people in here that I had scarcely or never heard of, and remarkable stories from individual congregations and congregants \u2013 featuring Harold Camping style ranting about the end days, German Pietists who murdered people in their own congregation, Quaker women who were publishing defenses of women in the ministry, and Protestant dissenters from all over Europe who were coming into South Carolina to man newly opening frontier towns but along with them brought a huge variety of Protestant practices that set Anglicans\u2019 teeth on edge \u2013 that I\u2019ve never seen so extensively narrated and discussed before.
