Adopted, itinerant, and always looking beyond the horizon, I feel as if it\u2019s taken my whole life to learn the value staying, and continuity, and place. \u00a0Now, just as I\u2019m starting to get it, my oldest daughter is leaving, moving to Europe for \u201cawhile\u201d, in response to God\u2019s call on her life. \u00a0Ironic isn\u2019t it? \u00a0I\u2019m learning to settle as she\u2019s picking up her tent and moving \u2013 both of us growing in response to God. \u00a0I love her fiercely because we share so much. I\u2019ll follow her <a href=\"http:\/\/kristidahlstrom.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/em><em> (and you can too) \u00a0I\u2019ll miss her deeply, daily. \u00a0But I know she\u2019s following the God of Abraham, and will be a blessing to many. \u00a0Here\u2019s her take on it, along with a family good bye video. \u00a0I hope you enjoy both:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kristi&#039;s send-off.mov\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n26Mo3r4Cbw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now the Lord said to Abram, \u201cGo forth from your country and from your relatives and from your father\u2019s house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, and so you shall be a blessing.\u201d Genesis 12:1-2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leaving is a loud presence lately, impossible to ignore four days from departure.\u00a0 It whispers to me as I take down the curtains in the Ingraham High School classroom where I\u2019ve taught English for four years, taunts me with luggagey staging area that my parents\u2019 basement has become.\u00a0 Leaving cheers from goodbye parties, smiles its way across from me in restaurants, reminds me that it\u2019s the last time for a while.\u00a0 Soon we\u2019ll be alone, leaving and I.<\/p>\n<p>In a week I\u2019ll be on my way to Europe, and the truth is that I\u2019m excited to go.\u00a0 Along with the familiar allure new places and exploration, I\u2019ll be teaching, which I love more every day.\u00a0 In the summer it will be Bible students at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fackeltraeger.at\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tauernhof Bible School <\/a>in central Austria.\u00a0\u00a0 Beginning in August, my students will be the sixth- and seventh-grade children of missionaries at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bfacademy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Black Forest Academy<\/a> in southwestern Germany.\u00a0 I look ahead to this adventure with greater anticipation than has ever drawn me away before, excited to serve, rather than observe, the wide world that awaits.<\/p>\n<p>There is a sense of timelessness to this journey, as I don\u2019t have a return date in mind.\u00a0 A few years, I shrug in answer to a How Long, aware that I\u2019m just guessing.\u00a0 <em>How long?<\/em> I\u2019ve asked so many times in the last twenty-five years.\u00a0 Sometimes on long road trips, but mostly to God when I\u2019m tired and concerned that this place, this situation, this struggle, might last <em>forever<\/em>.\u00a0 And though Mount Vernon (where we drove for groceries and violin lessons) is always about an hour from Marblemount (where we lived, among trees and a river), the rest of the How Longs don\u2019t get an answer.\u00a0 For the first time, going from a life I love to one I don\u2019t yet know, I\u2019m not asking.\u00a0 How long?\u00a0 Long enough.\u00a0 Until I show you where else to go.<\/p>\n<p>Abram must have felt this.\u00a0 If FlannelGraph memory serves me, they were doing fine in Ur.\u00a0 Better than fine, they were rich and respected.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to follow God away from somewhere awful, but those aren\u2019t the people of faith whose lives inspire me to live bravely and trust God.\u00a0 Leave <em>this<\/em>?\u00a0 Abram must have asked.\u00a0 Maybe he thought that the sky above the desert looked spectacular, sighed as he crossed the pass that shut the door on seventy-five good years in Ur.\u00a0 But he still went, not asking when or if he was coming back, content to follow God further down the path of greatness, promised yet unknown.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how I feel going out this week. I am rich in family and friends, rich in the blessings of home and belonging.\u00a0 I\u2019m leaving home knowing in God\u2019s calling that home is waiting for me, half a world away. Because even the ninth graders know that home isn\u2019t a building or a city; Abraham learned that it wasn\u2019t a country or even a family.\u00a0 Home is Christ.\u00a0 And in pursuit of home I\u2019ll go anywhere, for however long it takes to get there.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This coming Sunday, as we begin a new series at my church, I\u2019ll be sharing about the tension between being sojourners and settling down.
