<\/a><\/p>\nMy immediately preceding blog post was about \u201cfundamentalism\u201d and how I identify it. So now it seems appropriate to do the same, as I did there, with the opposite end of the theological<\/em> spectrum among self-identified Christians. Along with many other scholars of religion and especially Christian theology I identify that opposite end as \u201cliberal Christianity.\u201d Whether people at either end of the spectrum should<\/em> be considered authentically Christian is not my concern here. I am simply attempting to help those who are not sure what these categories mean settle on some way of interpreting them other than the popular methods<\/em>. By \u201cpopular\u201d here I simply mean informal, casual, a-historical and usually a-theological.<\/p>\n As with fundamentalism and evangelicalism, many Americans simply look at a Christian\u2019s (or church\u2019s) politics<\/em> and decide whether he\/she is \u201cpro-gay rights\u201d or \u201cpro-choice\u201d on abortion or \u201cleft-leaning\/socialist\u201d on economics and thereby decide whether \u201cliberal\u201d is the appropriate label. That\u2019s too easy and sometimes misleading. \u201cLiberal Christian\u201d is a theological<\/em> label and category and is technically, at least, independent of politics. In other words, a Christian might<\/em> be liberal theologically and conservative socially and politically. There is no necessary link, connection, between liberal theology and liberal politics.<\/p>\n Like nearly all broad categories \u201cliberal\u201d is what philosophers call \u201cindexical;\u201d it is always tied to a particular context. What is \u201cliberal\u201d in the United States in 2017 is not the same as \u201cliberal\u201d in China in 2017. To avoid sheer subjectivity, then, \u201cliberal Christianity\u201d needs to be placed in a context. Here, as with fundamentalism and evangelicalism, the context is the United States in 2017. (However, I suspect that, in general, my description of \u201cliberal Christianity\u201d will roughly apply in Europe and all of North America at this time.)<\/p>\n Also, to avoid sheer subjectivity, making \u201cliberal\u201d little more than an emotional label, we have to tie \u201cliberal Christianity\u201d to history<\/em>. For me, as for most historical theologians, these labels and categories are defined by historical prototypes<\/em>\u2014people, documents, meetings, events, movements, etc., that have come to be distinctively representatives of that type.<\/p>\n *Sidebar: The opinions expressed here are my own (or those of the guest writer); I do not speak for any other person, group or organization; nor do I imply that the opinions expressed here reflect those of any other person, group or organization unless I say so specifically. Before commenting read the entire post and the \u201cNote to commenters\u201d at its end.*<\/em><\/p>\n Many scholarly definitions of \u201cliberal Christianity\u201d have been offered. For me, a good place to begin is the definition offered by historical theologian Claude Welch. (If you want to know who he was look him up on Wikipedia but be sure the Claude Welch you read about there is the historical theologian.) Welch defined liberal Christianity as \u201cMaximal acknowledgement of the claims of modernity\u201d in Christian theology (and ethics).<\/p>\n In other words, according to Welch, and many others within the liberal tradition of modern Christianity, \u201cthe best of modern thought\u201d is a source and norm for Christian theology (and ethics) alongside the Bible and tradition. And, if there is a conflict between the Bible and tradition, on the one hand, and the best of modern thought, on the other hand, the latter trumps the former. This is expressed very clearly by many liberal Protestant theologians.<\/p>\n Here are some \u201challmarks\u201d I see shared by most modern liberal Christians:<\/p>\n 1) A tendency to reduce the Bible to \u201cthe Christian classic\u201d that is \u201cinspired\u201d insofar as it is inspiring;<\/p>\n 2) A tendency to reduce Christianity itself to ethics such that doctrine is an expression of collective opinion always open to revision in light of changing cultural conditions;<\/p>\n 3) A tendency to embrace and promote individualism in spirituality and doctrine while insisting on certain controversial ethical positions as matters of justice and therefore beyond debate;<\/p>\n 4) A tendency to deny miracles or \u201cdemythologize\u201d them so that belief in no miracle is essential to authentic Christian existence;<\/p>\n 5) A tendency to emphasize the immanence of God over God\u2019s transcendence;<\/p>\n 6) A tendency to believe in the essential goodness of humanity and to deny hell except as inauthentic existence in this life;<\/p>\n 7) A tendency to interpret Jesus as different from other humans only in degree (e.g., more spiritually and ethically advanced) and not in kind;<\/p>\n 8) A tendency to promote authentic Christian existence as a life of love only without judgment (except of \u201cinjustice\u201d).<\/p>\n H. Richard Niebuhr famously described liberal Christianity as belief that \u201cA God without wrath brought men without sin into a kingdom without judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a cross.\u201d<\/p>\n There are certain \u201cbuzzwords\u201d or \u201cbuzz phrases\u201d that, to me, signal insipient, if not full-grown, liberal Christianity. Among them are \u201cinclusiveness,\u201d \u201cjourney is goal,\u201d \u201cbelong before believe.\u201d<\/p>\n If fundamentalism tends to be rigid, dogmatic, contrarian, separatist, liberal Christianity tends to be shallow, insipid, plastic, and fuzzy.<\/p>\n Of course, almost nobody accepts these latter descriptions as accurate of themselves. Nevertheless, these are dangers I see in these two ends of the theological spectrum of American Christianity.<\/p>\n *Note to commenters:<\/em> This blog is not a discussion board; please respond with a question or comment only to me.
