Last night I had my favorite kind of conversation \u2014 a good, long, deep, in-person one with two of my favorite Portland people. \u00a0We were talking about human motivation \u2014 about what makes us do what we do \u2014 and my friend said that people are motivated by their deepest need.
\nI stayed up late thinking about that idea, and woke up thinking about it again. \u00a0I was thinking about my deepest need. \u00a0My least healed wound. \u00a0I realized that I don\u2019t often think about it \u2014 because it seems too good to be true, that Love would want to come all the way in. \u00a0That Love would be that<\/em> generous, that<\/em> merciful.<\/p>\n

When Jesus began his ministry, he read from Isaiah 61.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

The Spirit\u00a0of the Sovereign\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u00a0is on me,<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>because the\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u00a0has anointed\u00a0me<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>to proclaim good news\u00a0to the poor.<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\nHe has sent me to bind up\u00a0the brokenhearted,<\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>to proclaim freedom\u00a0for the captives<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and release from darkness for the prisoners,<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0<\/span>to proclaim the year of the\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u2019s favor<\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and the day of vengeance\u00a0of our God,<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\nto comfort\u00a0all who mourn,<\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and provide for those who grieve in Zion\u2014<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\nto bestow on them a crown\u00a0of beauty<\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>instead of ashes,<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\nthe oil\u00a0of joy<\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>instead of mourning,<\/span><\/span><\/em>
\nand a garment of praise<\/span><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>instead of a spirit of despair\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They will rebuild the ancient ruins<\/span><\/strong><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and restore the places long devastated;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em>
\nthey will renew the ruined cities<\/span><\/strong><\/em>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>that have been devastated for generations.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Maybe this Advent season, you have a place like that.<\/p>\n

\"doorway\"<\/p>\n

A secret buried so deep, it seems like it would take an impossible amount of courage to unearth it. \u00a0A wound that aches so deeply, you\u2019ve given up all hope for healing. \u00a0A place so long devastated and deserted, you\u2019ve haven\u2019t dared to even dream of rebuilding.<\/p>\n

And maybe this Advent season, you need to be reminded that this \u2014 this place long devastated in you<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 is what Advent is all about.<\/p>\n

Jesus came for you.<\/p>\n

Jesus came for this.<\/p>\n

Jesus came to give you the courage to speak your truth, to name your deepest wound, to acknowledge your deepest longing.<\/p>\n

This Advent season, Divine Love is knocking on the door of your heart.<\/p>\n

Divine Love is ready to begin the healing process.<\/p>\n

Divine Love is ready to rebuild your\u00a0place long devastated.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
