It\u2019s the first Monday of Advent. \u00a0The beginning of the season where we remember the Nativity, where we meditate on the First Coming, where we make space for Emmanuel to come sit with us, to dwell with us in our fragile, finite frame.
\nTo welcome Emmanuel, the wise men brought three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.<\/p>\n

Gold because it\u2019s valuable.<\/p>\n

Myrrh \u2014 embalming ointment \u2014 to honor Jesus\u2019 humanity.<\/p>\n

Frankincense \u2014 incense \u2014 to honor Jesus\u2019 divinity.<\/p>\n

This Advent, reflect on the gift God gave to the world in the form of Jesus.<\/p>\n

And reflect on the gift God gave to the world in the form of you.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You are gold. You hold intrinsic value. \u00a0You are God\u2019s currency. \u00a0You are his investment and reward.<\/p>\n

You are myrrh. \u00a0You are finite. \u00a0You are fragile. \u00a0You are human. \u00a0You make mistakes. \u00a0Your body breaks. \u00a0You struggle against doubt and despair. \u00a0You experience the world with your senses. \u00a0You touch, smell, taste, hear and see. \u00a0You leave fingerprints on what you touch. \u00a0You leave footprints where you walk.<\/p>\n

You are frankincense. \u00a0You are divine. \u00a0You are an aroma to the world around you. \u00a0Your fragrance ascends to the heavens. \u00a0When you rise to God, he closes his eyes and smiles and sighs.<\/p>\n

This Advent, remember\u00a0the gifts.<\/p>\n

The gifts of the wisemen.<\/p>\n

The gift of Jesus.<\/p>\n

The gift of you.<\/p>\n
