This Top of the Country<\/a> series blogs through the Country hits of the year, focusing this week on \u201cBrunette\u201d by Tucker Wetmore.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll admit I\u2019d never heard of Tucker Wetmore before his song hit number one. And it\u2019s definitely an interesting one!<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nThe music video has all the hallmarks of a classic Country song\u2013it\u2019s even set in the old West!<\/p>\nAnd yet, the song also breaks a number of conventions. Country music is heavily Southern (the imagery of this video aside, the genre doesn\u2019t have much \u201cWestern\u201d left in it). Which makes this bit stand out:<\/p>\n<blockquote>I need a brown-eyed 5\u2032 5\u2033 north side of the Mason Dixon line Kind ain\u2019t climbed up in a four-wheel drive that\u2019s lifted Never been fishing, never been mudding<\/p><\/blockquote>\nIn other words, he wants someone\u00a0not<\/em> like the stereotypical country girl. Why? \u201cGotta be, gotta be one that doesn\u2019t remind me of you.\u201d And of course with that we\u2019re right back in standard Country music territory.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12470\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12470\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/266\/2026\/06\/Tucker-Wetmore-Press-cr-Chase-Foster-2026-billboard-1800.webp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12470\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/266\/2026\/06\/Tucker-Wetmore-Press-cr-Chase-Foster-2026-billboard-1800-300x200.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Billboard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThis is something we all understand\u2013when we are hurt or have suffered a loss, we often run in the opposite direction. This is not a new observation\u2013it\u2019s exactly what Adam does in the Garden of Eden after he and Eve sin. That of course doesn\u2019t mean that there is sin in question every time. We don\u2019t know the circumstances of this song beyond the obvious heartbreak, and there\u2019s nothing wrong with preferring blondes to brunettes or vice-versa. That of course doesn\u2019t mean we should run from our problems or try to drown them in new pursuits. One lesson of the modern world is that we cannot simply escape issues by piling new things on top of them. Only the forgiveness that comes through the Gospel can ultimately set us right. This song, however, does an interesting job of showing human attempts to solve problems in human ways.
