Welcome to \u201cMind Over Media,\u201d a blog on books and film by a group of evangelical Christians.\u00a0 We are not artists, do not pretend to be professional critics, and have no pretension to Critical or any other kind of Theory.\u00a0 Among our contributors are an attorney, a professor of international relations, and a student at Yale Divinity.\u00a0 We have no methodology, no school of thought, and no official hermeneutic.\u00a0 We\u2019re a group of over-educated Christians who love 1) Jesus, 2) books and film, and 3) talking about Jesus and books and film.<\/p>\n
We are guided by Scripture.\u00a0 Paul commands us \u201cFinally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable\u2014if anything is excellent or praiseworthy\u2014think about such things,\u201d (Philippians 4:8).\u00a0 We are to have the \u201cmind of Christ,\u201d (1 Corinthians 2:16) and \u201ctake captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ,\u201d (2 Corinthians 10:5).\u00a0 The Christian is to be \u201ctransformed by the renewing of your mind,\u201d (Romans 12:2). We are to be \u201cshrewd as snakes and innocent as doves,\u201d (Matthew 10:16).\u00a0 We are to \u201ctest everything\u201d and \u201chold on to the good,\u201d (1 Thessalonians 5:21).<\/p>\n
We understand it to be part of our worship of God to examine the world around us, to discern what is true, noble, pure, and even \u201clovely,\u201d and to dwell on these things.\u00a0 That includes, we think, the cultural output of the world we live in.\u00a0 We are to sift the vast ocean of images and ideas, find the gems, and delight in them.\u00a0 (We might also take a moment to shun the chaff). \u00a0We do so because the good stuff is a gift from God.\u00a0 Good culture teaches, inspires, ennobles, even thrills us.\u00a0 The best even changes our lives.<\/p>\n
We pray that this blog becomes a way to edify Christians by holding up what is good, true, and beautiful\u2014even, occasionally, by finding traces of the gospel\u2014in the world\u2019s cultural output.\u00a0 We also pray this blog piques non-Christians interested in how we think.\u00a0 Finally, as in all things, we hope this blog glorifies God; in this case, we aim to glorify God with our minds and our media choices.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
