The Oscars are on Sunday.\u00a0 Here is a wrap-up of coverage from Schaeffer\u2019s Ghost on some of the nominees.<\/p>\n

For Best Picture, we reviewed seven of the nine nominees\u2013all except Argo<\/em> (the current favorite to win) and Silver Linings Playbook<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Kendrick Kuo found Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/em><\/a>, a coming-of-age story set in an impoverished Louisiana-coast slum, \u201ca film of art that is to be savored and appreciated, more than to be enjoyed,\u201d and judged that he \u201cwould not watch it again for its entertainment value,\u201d although he found plenty of material for reflection\u2013from environmentalism to Hurricane Katrina to poverty.<\/p>\n

Kendrick also appreciated<\/a> the nuanced portrayal of religion in the antebellum South in Quentin Tarantino\u2019s Django Unchained<\/em>, an epic historical slavery-western mashup, and its deconstruction of the idea of a racial hierarchy.<\/p>\n

Alexis Neal wrote<\/a> that \u201cfew films are as fraught with Gospel themes\u201d as Les Miserables<\/em>. The themes of grace and forgiveness resonate strongly in the story of Jean Valjean and the lives of the desperate poor in 19th Century France.\u00a0 Also, Anne Hathaway is a lock for Best Supporting Actress.\u00a0 Coyle<\/a> agreed that he has \u201cseen few better pictures of the Christian doctrine of the new life\u201d on film.<\/p>\n

Life of Pi<\/em>, an adventure travelogue that follows a young Indian boy lost at sea with a tiger, is favored to win Best Cinematography for it gorgeous visuals, and Kendrick thought<\/a> the movie was essentially \u201can argument for the existence of God based on the experience of beauty\u201d\u2013but an argument that was, in the end, empty and unsatisfying.<\/p>\n

I wrote that Zero Dark Thirty<\/em><\/a>, about the ten-year manhunt for Osama bin Laden, was \u201ca sensitive and respectful film, one that honors the people who lived its story,\u201d and that it successfully avoided the trap of becoming a cheap and gory revenge fantasy.<\/p>\n

Amour<\/em>, a French drama about the difficult choices of aging, <\/em>is up for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film, and is a shoe-in for the latter.\u00a0 Christian Hamaker, however, disliked it strongly, and thought it compared unfavorably<\/a> with Quartet, <\/em>another film about aging that wasn\u2019t nominated for anything.<\/p>\n

I wrote that Lincoln<\/em><\/a> was a \u201cluminescent\u201d film that contained one of the best moments of \u201csentiment and poetry on screen\u201d that director Steven Spielberg has brought us (he\u2019s likely to win Best Director).\u00a0 It also reminded us of the vital truth that \u201cwithout moral purpose, war is simply murder.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, for Best Documentary, Kendrick Kuo found NO<\/a>, about a surprisingly successful political campaign to deny Augusto Pinochet another term in Argentina\u2019s highest office, an occasion to remember that \u201cthe politics of this world is also in need of redemption and that perfect politics will only occur when the perfect polity has arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
