What does it mean for the nation now that\u00a0Dobbs v Jackson\u00a0<\/em>has overturned\u00a0Roe v Wade<\/em>? This is a question that we haven\u2019t had to answer until a couple of weeks ago, but which is now pressing. Although written and published (albeit just barely) before the release of the\u00a0Dobbs\u00a0<\/em>decision, Ryan Anderson and Alexandra DeSanctis attempt to answer this question in their new book\u00a0Tearing us Apart: How abortion harms everything and solves nothing<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, I think now is the time for those of us on the pro-life side of things to extend the open hand. That is, we should seriously pursue establishing social programs that will address the concerns the pro-choice crowd have. If they are concerned about the health of mothers, we should support public health programs for mothers. If they are concerned about the economic well-being of mothers, we should promote economic assistance for mothers. And so on. I\u2019m a small-government guy, so I\u2019d prefer to see these things done by communities and private institutions first, but I don\u2019t write-off the government as a provider of these services either. Again, whatever concerns the pro-choice crowd have should be addressed. Obviously there need to be all kinds of caveats to that on both sides, but it\u2019s an offer that should be made by pro-life politicians in good faith.\n
